Why scott hoying and his husband shared baby news on ‘dwts’ dedication night

Pentatonix singer Scott Hoying had a feeling that Dancing With the Stars’ Dedication Night would be the perfect place to reveal he and husband Mark Hoying are expanding their family.

“I mean, this is such a special experience and there’s something so beautiful about dance that’s so expressive and it was Dedication Night,” Scott, 34, exclusively told NewsPlop after the Tuesday, October 14, live show. “I knew instantly when I heard [it was] Dedication Night, I thought [of] Mark because he changed my life in every way and I love him so much and this all lined up so perfectly.”

Scott and pro partner Rylee Arnold performed a foxtrot to the singer’s live rendition of his song “Parallel” in a sweet tribute to Mark, 34, who even joined the pair on the ballroom floor. (The routine ended with the married couple, who tied the knot in 2023, cuddling on the floor in an homage to one of their early dates.)

Just ahead of Scott and Arnold’s dance, he revealed in his rehearsal package that their surrogate is pregnant.

“We actually didn’t really originally plan to announce it, and then we found out and we’ve just decided it’s just so special,” Scott told Us. “It’s a really good memory and we’re honored to have Rylee be a part of it.”

Arnold, 20, chimed in to note that she was “so honored” to be included in the couple’s special moment.

“It was really magical. I didn’t think about how when the package played and it said we’re having a baby, the whole room would cheer,” Scott recalled to Us. “I just never thought of that and it really moved me to tears.”

When it came time to perform the emotional dance, Scott was mostly “just thinking about love.”

“I didn’t think too much about the posture and everything and all the details during the dance,” he said. “It was a really beautiful experience I felt really present for.”

Scott and Arnold ended up receiving a score of 30 out of 40 from the four judges. (Former mirrorball champ Kym Johnson-Herjavec joined the regular panel of Derek Hough, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba.)

“Honestly, [I’m] just so happy because it’s [an] improvement and it’s better from our week prior,” Arnold told Us of their ranking on the leaderboard. “I’m just excited to use this momentum to keep going and thought it was [an] amazing score. We got great critiques that are so useful, we can take that into our weeks to really get better.”

The judges, however, did offer Scott feedback about his posture.

“I don’t think they know about it, but also, I feel like I’m starting to learn how to hold frame even with it,” Scott told Us of dancing through his scoliosis diagnosis. “It’s just been an adapting process.”

He continued, “I feel like they give great advice and I’m just always so honored to learn from the best and we’re getting better each week — and we got two eights this week.”

Dancing With the Stars airs on ABC and Disney+ Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET.
