Shonda Rhimes is still figuring out how she can close the chapter on Grey’s Anatomy.

“To be at 450 [episodes] is amazing, and really all because of the fans and the fact that they’ve kept watching the show and they’ve stuck with it and they’re excited and invested,” Rhimes, 55, said during the Monday, October 13, episode of the Today show.

Rhimes went on to admit that “people have been asking” how she envisions the years-long series coming to an end.

“I’d say back at around episode 150, I knew how it was going to end,” she continued. “Now we’re at 450, I have no idea. I mean, I wasn’t sure we would get past season 4 or 5, so the fact that we’re here in season 22 is insane.”

As for how many more seasons there could be, Rhimes noted: “I feel like at this point, that decision is not mine as much as it is the fans … I want everybody to end in a really positive, great way.”

The medical drama premiered in 2005, centering around the personal and professional lives of surgical interns and their supervisors. The series is narrated by Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) and has also included Sandra Oh (Christina Yang), Katherine Heigl (Izzie Stevens), Justin Chambers (Alex Karev), T.R. Knight (George O’Malley), Chandra Wilson (Miranda Bailey), Isaiah Washington (Preston Burke), James Pickens (Richard Webber) and Patrick Dempsey (Derek Shepherd “McDreamy”).

In the season 22 premiere episode, which aired on Thursday, October 9, the team dealt with the aftermath of a shocking explosion — and Dr. Monica Beltran (Natalie Morales) ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Anthony Hill, who portrays Dr. Winston Ndugu, exclusively told NewsPlop that Morales’ onscreen death is just the start of the season 22 events.

“There’s a lot of challenges for the people who survived the blast for lots of different reasons,” Hill, 37, told Us on Friday, October 10. “Everybody has their own traumas from that experience in that blast, and then, picking up the pieces and trying to literally put the hospital back together and figure out how to move forward is going to be a tough dynamic to navigate for everybody and health physically, mentally and emotionally.”

Hill teased that the moment will lead to “big curve balls” for the surviving members of the Grey Sloane Memorial doctors.

“A lot of us are looking at each other in these scenes just like, ‘This is crazy,’ but I think that’s a testament to the writers,” Hill shared. “They figured out how to do this show in a way that’s so effective for people, and that’s why people keep coming back and watching it. They just really enjoy what ride they’re gonna go on [each] week. And so, I think we’re doing a pretty good job. I think people will like it.”

Morales, 40, has since addressed her character’s death, reassuring fans that she is OK. “Guys, I don’t know what to tell you. I’m not dead,” Morales said in a Friday TikTok video. “I’m right here. Don’t worry No matter what you’ve heard or what you’ve read in the comments of all my other videos, I didn’t die. I’m right here. You can come see me any time you want. Thank you for worrying though.”

Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET.
