Emerging from the scenic coastal town of Melkbosstrand, South Africa, Luc Lavigne has turned a lifelong passion for music into an impressive career in the heart of Hollywood. At just 22 years old, his production, mixing, and mastering expertise has earned him opportunities to work in some of the most renowned studios in the world. With a growing list of accomplishments, Luc’s story exemplifies the power of vision, hard work, and an unwavering love for his craft.
We caught up with Luc to learn more about his journey, challenges, and the milestones that marked his success.
Q1: How did your musical journey start, and what led you to where you are today?
Music has been in my life for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Melkbosstrand, a rich musical family tradition surrounded me—my parents and grandparents were all musicians. I started playing drums, guitar, and piano at five years old. I became obsessed with understanding how music was made, which eventually led me to fall in love with production. The magic of turning raw sounds into a polished song fascinated me.
After high school, I pursued Audio Engineering at SAE in Cape Town. Then came a turning point—I was awarded a scholarship to the Musicians Institute in Hollywood. Moving to Los Angeles in 2022 felt like stepping into a dream. I completed my Associate in Science of Studio Recording and began working in the industry that had always inspired me.
Q2: What challenges have you faced, and how did you overcome them?
Growing up in a small town came with limitations. The South African music industry didn’t offer much opportunity for the kind of international sound I aspired to create. Pursuing mainstream success from there felt like a long shot, but I held onto my belief that I would one day live and work in Los Angeles. I even joked with my family about it—now it’s no joke!
Hollywood isn’t without its difficulties. The pace is relentless, and losing your connection to home and loved ones can be easy. But I’ve learned that having a strong support network is crucial. Surround yourself with people who lift you up, and remember that setbacks are temporary. That mindset has helped me navigate the most challenging moments.
Q3: Can you highlight some recent professional experiences and achievements?
Since earning my employment authorization in 2024, I’ve had the privilege to work in iconic studios like Chalice Recording (Beyonce, BTS), Paramount Studios (Justin Bieber, Eminem), East West Studios (Olivia Rodrigo), and Sunset Sound (Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog). I’ve contributed to projects for major labels, including Sony Music, Def Jam, and Interscope Records.
One standout moment this year was producing, mixing, and mastering Rav Steelo’s “CP Company.” It climbed Spotify UK’s “Viral Top 50,” reached #48 on Shazam’s “Top 200,” and gained over 3 million streams and 30 million social media views all within just 3 months. It also earned a #1 nomination from Shazam for “Artist on the Move.” Being recognized by MUSO.AI’s “ENCORE24” as one of the top 10% of producers, mixing engineers, and mastering engineers worldwide has been another highlight. I also have the privilege of working as the lead recording engineer for the widely popular children’s YouTube series SadieTV, which has amassed over 30,000 subscribers and more than 10 million views—and the audience keeps growing.
This success has come fast, and I’m incredibly thankful for all the people who have believed in me. Every day I get to make music is a gift, and I couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
