Jd vance blasts reporter for ‘trying to drive a wedge’ between him and trump

People are still trying to figure out how Vice President JD Vance really feels about the war against Iran. Previously, Vance framed himself as an anti-interventionist. Back in 2024, he made his stance on going to war with Iran clear: “America doesn’t have to constantly police every region of the world. Our interest, I think very much, is in not going to war with Iran. It would be a huge distraction of resources. It would be massively expensive to our country.”

And yet, here we are. So, understandably, people are wondering if Vance suddenly changed his mind, or if he has had to go along with something that he doesn’t actually support. A reporter recently asked him whether he was “completely on board with the current war.”

He didn’t say yes, but also didn’t say no.

Instead, he seemingly took inspiration from President Donald Trump and attacked the reporter’s question. Addressing the journalist, Philip Wegmann from RealClearPolitics, Vance said, “Look, I think that, I know what you’re trying to do, Phil, you’re trying to drive a wedge between members of the administration, between me and the president.”

In reality, the reporter was asking the question because of Vance’s previous statements about going to war with Iran. But Vance continued, “What the president said consistently, going back to 2015, and I agreed with him, is that Iran should not have a nuclear weapon. We have taken this military action under the president’s leadership. I think all of us, whether you’re a Democrat or Republican, should pray for success and pray for the safety of our troops.”

He added, “That’s the approach that I’ve taken: make it as successful as possible.”

But the reporter brought up Vance’s previous statements and questioned whether he was hesitant.

Vance acted confused by the question, but then went on to repeat a line he has used before: that the United States had “dumb presidents” in the past, but now has a “smart president.” However, that doesn’t exactly explain why Vance is now acting like he supports the war, given that he previously asserted that Trump’s “best foreign policy” was “not starting any wars” in a 2023 op-ed. At the time, he wrote, “He has my support in 2024 because I know he won’t recklessly send Americans to fight overseas.”

Now, in a way, he’s defending the war and standing by Trump. “I think one big difference, Phil, is that we have a smart president, whereas in the past we’ve had dumb presidents,” Vance said in response to the reporter’s question. “And I trust President Trump to get the job done, to do a good job for the American people and to make sure that the mistakes of the past aren’t repeated.”

A White House official also dismissed the rumors that Vance has not been supportive of Trump’s actions in Iran. “This fake narrative is absolutely laughable to every single person who is in the know in Washington,” the official told Fox News. “It’s a classic mainstream media creation.”

What Vance told the reporter is very similar to what he said on NBC News’ “Meet the Press” last year.

In attempting to explain Trump’s actions in Iran in 2025, Vance said, “I certainly empathize with Americans who are exhausted after 25 years of foreign entanglements in the Middle East. I understand the concern, but the difference is that back then, we had dumb presidents, and now we have a president who actually knows how to accomplish America’s national security objectives.” He also claimed that the president was targeting Iran’s nuclear weapons program, and that it would not “be some long, drawn-out thing.”

At the time, he said, “We’ve got in, we’ve done the job of setting their nuclear program back. We’re going to now work to permanently dismantle that nuclear program over the coming years, and that is what the president has set out to do. Simple principle: Iran can’t have a nuclear weapon.”
