Given how often President Donald Trump has insisted that any negative report about him is actually “fake news,” self-awareness does not seem to be his strong suit. But every so often, he gets caught in a rare moment of honesty that surprises people. Most of these admissions either seem totally unintentional or like something he was trying to pass off as a joke.
A recent comment he made has been circulating online because, although he was trying to make people laugh, a lot of critics felt that he was really telling on himself and saying the quiet part out loud.
Trump actually said he likes to surround himself with losers.
People in the audience laughed like he was simply telling a funny joke. But given that people have seen who he surrounds himself with, it didn’t really sound much like a joke to critics online.
He made the comment during the Future Investment Initiative (FII) Priority Summit in Florida (the same event where he invited investors to ask him questions about sex, by the way).
“You don’t have to wait a lifetime to find out if somebody is a winner or a loser,” Trump said at the event. “You got a lot of losers, mostly losers, fortunately. It’s a good thing to have a lot of losers. I always like to hang around with losers, actually, because it makes me feel better.” The level of self-awareness in this statement is actually astounding.

“I hate guys that are very, very successful, and you have to listen to their success stories,” he continued. “I like people who like to listen to my success.” People on social media couldn’t believe he actually admitted this out loud at an event (and on camera), even if what he confessed to wasn’t exactly new information. “so he just admitted his administration is full of a bunch of losers who aren’t successful? lol we already know,” one critic said.
Critics of the president often comment on how he seemingly chose the least qualified people for roles in his administration. When he said that he likes “losers,” it kind of made sense to them. One person who shared a clip of Trump’s comments on Reddit wrote that he “perfectly describes his administration” in it.
People had similar reactions when the clip started circulating on X. “Finally,” someone wrote on the platform. “An explanation on Trump’s cabinet picks.” Another person commented, “That’s the most honest thing he’s ever said.”
For once, some critics actually agreed with him. “Rubio, Hegseth, Bondi, RFK Junior, and Kash Patel? I agree with Trump 100% on this,” someone else concluded.
All jokes aside, people found it terrifying.

One critic who shared the clip on X wrote, “Our president ‘loves the poorly educated’, said ‘smart people don’t like him’, and admits he ‘hates successful people’ and would rather ‘hang out with losers’. Makes you worry about his hiring practices and inner circle doesn’t it?”
